Case: Hillerød Utility

At INOPOWER, we are pleased to be part of Hillerød Utility’s climate plan. From a technical perspective, we have delivered a high-voltage (10 kV) electrode boiler.

Our electric boiler operates on a completely different principle than boilers with electric heating elements.
In an electrode boiler, the electric current is conducted directly through the water, which acts as a conductor. When the current passes through the water, heat is generated due to the water’s electrical resistance. This results in:

  • Very fast regulation – the boiler can start and stop almost instantaneously.
  • High output – typically in the range of 10–60 MW, making it suitable for large district heating systems.
  • No heating elements – the energy is transferred directly to the water, resulting in high efficiency and low maintenance.

Electrode boilers are therefore ideal for utilizing surplus electricity from wind and solar power on a large scale, while also helping to balance the power grid.
